5 Tips for Traveling Internationally

Make Your Next Trip A Stress Free and Memorable

Traveling to a new country is exhilarating, but it can also come with its fair share of challenges. From navigating unfamiliar streets to communicating in a foreign language, preparation is key to ensuring a smooth and enjoyable trip.

At Tranquilo Tours, we’ve learned a thing or two about what makes international travel easier. Here are five practical tips to help you make the most of your next adventure.

1. Learn a Little of the Local Language

Even a small effort to learn the local language can go a long way in connecting with people. Whether it’s basic greetings like “hello,” “please,” and “thank you,” or phrases like “How much does this cost?” locals will appreciate your effort to communicate in their tongue.

And don’t worry if you flounder or mispronounce a word—your genuine attempt will often earn you more respect than perfect grammar. Plus, it can lead to fun and memorable interactions!

2. Protect Yourself from the Sun

If you’re heading somewhere sunny—especially during a winter getaway—be mindful of sun exposure. Sunburns not only hurt but can also sap your energy, making it harder to enjoy your trip.

A wide-brimmed hat is a stylish and practical souvenir to pick up on your travels, and sunscreen is a must. Remember, it’s better to take precautions than to spend your vacation nursing a painful burn.

3. Use Ride-Share Apps to Avoid Taxi Hassles

Ride-share apps like Uber and Bolt are lifesavers in many international destinations. They eliminate the need for haggling with local taxi drivers and ensure you get a fair, transparent price that locals also pay.

That said, it’s important to check ahead—these services aren’t available everywhere. In cities where they are, they’re often the easiest and most convenient way to get around.

4. Always Have Backup Cash

Nothing ruins a lovely dinner faster than finding out your credit card has been blocked mid-meal. Credit card companies sometimes flag international purchases as suspicious, even if you’ve informed them of your travel plans.

To avoid awkward moments, stash some emergency cash in your suitcase or travel bag. This backup fund can also come in handy if you lose your wallet or run into other unexpected situations.

5. Download an Offline Area Map in Google Maps Before You Go

Getting lost in a foreign country can be exciting—or frustrating, depending on the situation. To make sure you can always find your way, download a map the area you’re visiting on Google Maps before your trip.

With an offline map, you can access directions even if you don’t have cellular service or wifi (note it works better with wifi or cellular service but it will preform basic location and mapping services if pre-downloaded). Other functions in google maps I have found helpful are the ability to save your favorite locations by dropping pins is very helpful for remembering your favorite spots for next time or if you have a friend going to that area.
